The Purpose of ECC Groups

God created all of us to live in community with others and only then can we experience the full life He intends for us (Genesis 2:18; Galatians 6:2). ECC believes life change happens in the context of relationships. Meaningful relationships can be hard to find, and ECC Groups exist to make life-changing relationships relevant and accessible to our members and to the community beyond our walls.

A Gospel Thread: Jesus Foretells His Death and ResurrectionThree different times in the gospels Jesus foretold his upcoming death and resurrection. Each time it is clear that his closest disciples did not understand what he was saying. They understood that Jesus was the Messiah; they did not understand what kind of kingdom Jesus was bringing. If those closest to Jesus while he was on earth misunderstood him, it is possible that we could misunderstand him today. This class will look at what the disciples knew about Jesus, and why they misunderstood what Jesus was doing, so that we can examine what we understand about his kingdom.Sunday at 10:30 AMCentral Valley

Jesus' Farewell Message* An ECC Class! Overview: This class is an excellent starting place for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each Lesson discusses the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview daily. Taught by Tim Perkins. Our next study, Jesus' Farewell Message, is by Francis Chan. Do you know Jesus? It’s one thing to know facts about him, but to experience his love, wisdom, and guidance in your life is what it means to follow him. On the night before he was crucified, Jesus invited his disciples into a deep relationship with the triune God—and his invitation stands for us too. In this 6-part series, Francis Chan dives into John 13–17, a passage rich in promises, commands, and eternal truths. He’ll remind us we aren’t called to a part-time faith—we were made to know, walk with, and commune with God.Weekly: Sundays at 9:00 AMCentral Valley

Participants are encouraged to get the book: Four Views of the End Times: Christian Views on Jesus' Second Coming, available on Amazon. New Testament LettersAn ECC Class! Overview: This group is studying various New Testament Letters. We have studied Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians . We began studying 1 Thessalonians on October 27, 2024. After we finish this study, we will proceed to study 2 Thessalonians. 1 Thessalonians was probably the first New Testament book written. Even though the world today seems quite different, many similarities to the problems we face may be found in the Thessalonian church. We hope you will find these letters interesting and relevant to today's world. We conduct class both in-person and online for those who cannot attend the live class. We meet in-person in the Central Valley Administration building’s large conference room. Our Zoom meeting requires a password to join the meeting. If you want to join this meeting online please email Bryan Burns at bryburns@aol.com to get the password and identify that you would like to attend the class online. Please join our group meeting online or in person.Weekly: Sundays at 9:00 AMCentral Valley

Reading Romans BackwardsReaders of the book of Romans sometimes read it as a book of abstract and systematic theology, rather than a letter addressing the real life situation of the house churches in Rome. Romans is indeed a treasure trove of gospel theology, but it is first a pastoral letter. Reading Romans can help us see the relationship between theology and life. This class will emphasize the pastoral elements of the letter, while not diminishing the theological elements. We will follow Scot McKnight’s approach in his book Reading Romans Backwards. We’ll start with chapters 12-16, where we will watch Paul deal with two groups of people causing division in the church: the strong, who claimed the power and privilege of Rome, and the weak, who claimed the advantage of the election of Israel. Then we’ll look at chapters 9-11, seeing God’s surprising purposes and future of Israel. Having studied the historical and situational context of the letter, we’ll be able to more fully understand the more theological sections. Chapters 1-4 deals with the sinfulness of both the strong and the weak. Chapters 5-8 shows the possibility of true transformation in the Spirit. By reading Romans in the context of its real life situation, we can learn how to live in a world controlled by sin, flesh, and systemic evil.Sunday at 10:30 AMCentral Valley
